Call for Solomons MPs to follow eco-tourism lead

3:20 pm on 20 November 2012

The director of tourism for the Solomon Islands Ministry of Culture and Tourism is calling on the country's parliamentarians to follow the lead of two Guadalcanal MPs funding new eco-tourism projects.

Barney Sivoro says Peter Shanel, who represents Central Guadalcanal and David Deipacha, the member for South Guadalcanal, have given landowners in their constituencies almost 80,000 US dollars for two trekking ventures.

He says the MPs have collaborated to spend their annual tourism development funding on the projects in the forest areas of Popomanseu, Makara Komburu and Suta.

"I believe if the other members can emulate what these two honourables are doing so the funds can be used to produce some tangible result in terms of our tourism development."

Barney Sivoro says the decision to devolve responsibility for tourism development funding to MPs earlier this year has sparked widespread concern.
