Fiji assistant police commissioner denies lack of information looks bad

Fiji police say it could be months before an investigation into the injuries received by escaped prisoners when they were recaptured by police is finished.

At least four of the five men were hospitalised, including one who had to have his leg amputated after being captured in a joint operation by police and soldiers in late September.

The assistant commissioner of police, Rusiate Tudravu, says it's being investigated but can't say whether the police have received a medical report yet into the men's injuries.

He denies the time it's taking for the investigation to be completed looks bad for the organisation.

"It's not really bad. Fiji is far much better than any other police officers in any other country outside Fiji. I think we are on top of all these things. We are much better than any other country."
