Police in Tonga are requesting the public's help after the alleged robbery and abduction of five people earlier this week.

In a statement police say they have arrested a 34 year old man in relation to the offences in which they say 3 males and two women were abducted from a home at Tofoa on Tuesday night.

They were tied up and held captive but on the Wednesday one of the victims escaped and notified police.

Police say by Thursday afternoon all five hostages had escaped.

They say they were in a state of shock, but not injured.

The police want community help in tracing a car used in the alleged abduction.
