Push in American Samoa for cancer treatment clinic

4:28 pm on 26 November 2012

The wife of American Samoa's Lieutenant Governor-elect Lemanu Peleti Mauga hopes to establish a cancer treatment centre in the territory.

Mrs. Pohakalani Mauga has been publicly speaking about her experience as a cancer survivor in the hope of getting women to seek early screening for cancers.

Most recently, she was a guest speaker at the Nu'uuli Vocational Technical High School's cancer awareness and fundraiser for a young woman who is battling leukemia.

"Since I am a cancer survivor I would like to try and see if we could actually set something up here because one of the hardest things is for American Samoa women or even men who have to go through treatment is just being away from home. So if we can actually establish something here to take care of our women, those that need treatment, that will be really great."
