Indonesian police say a group of gunmen who killed three officers in an attack on a police station today, in the Papua town of Wamena, were separatists.
Media reports in Indonesia quote a provincial police spokesman saying around 50 gunmen who are members of the separatist Free Papua Movement attacked the Pirime station and set it alight.
The spokesman says the gunmen launched an attack on the station, killing three officers in and around their barracks.
A shootout then broke out between police and the gunmen who eventually fled to the mountains, leaving the complex badly damaged by fire.
Security officials have reportedly launched an investigation into the incident.
