The US Coast Guard says it has found a field of debris that appears to be from an aircraft in the ocean about three kilometres north of Hawaii's island of Maui.

Lieutenant Leigh Cotterell of the Coast Guard says a wheel that could match a privately owned Cessna airplane that disappeared on Saturday night.

He says landing gear, life jackets, and aircraft antenna were also found, adding the nature of the debris seems unlikely anyone survived.

Coast Guard officials identified the pilot of that Cessna as Jose Krall, a Maui resident believed to be in his fifties.

Mr Krall was piloting the aircraft when it possibly crash landed approximately four kilometres north-east of Kahului Airport, most likely in the ocean, Saturday night.
