The Samoa Government is sending a seriously hurt police officer to New Zealand for treatment.

The officer was attacked last week by a rock wielding man after he and a colleague had gone to investigate a domestic dispute.

A police spokesperson says the dispute involved a man who had attempted to burn down the couple's house.

Assistant Commissioner Leaupepe Fatu Pula says the officer has internal injuries after being hit on the head with a rock.

He was released from hospital on Monday but the Government has given approval for him to be sent to New Zealand for observation.

One man has been arrested and charged over the attack but the police are still looking for another suspect.
