American Samoa Customs and Police investigate drug discovery

9:17 am on 6 December 2012

In American Samoa, customs and the police are investigating the source of a box that came through the Post Office which contained a large amount of marijuana.

Sources say three large ziplock bags containing marijuana were hidden amongst coffee beans and packed inside three galvanized pipes.

Customs officials were alerted to the box by a drug detecting dog last week. It's understood that several people attempted to claim the box.

After consultation with the Attorney General's Office, Customs was given permission to open the box yesterday and made the drug discovery.

One source said the street value of the marijuana found in the box is at least 10,000 US dollars.
