The President of the Oceania Powerlifting Federation, Robert Wilks, says the region is in good health but will always face challenges in terms of its geographical isolation.
The Oceania Championships continue in Sydney today, with lifters hoping to edge closer towards qualifying for next year's World Champs in Russia and the World Games in Colombia.
The President of the Oceania Powerlifting Federation, Robert Wilks, expects three of four new world records to be set by the end of the three-day competition.
He says there's plenty of talent in the region but taking that next step can be a challenge, especially for the Island countries.
"To get from Samoa or Tonga or Nauru to Russia, or to Colombia, is quite a task and obviously there's quite a cost involved so that's been the problem we've had over the last five or ten years. But the sport is growing enormously in these countries, and hence the resources going into the sport is developing, so we're looking forward to a brighter future."
