The police in Tonga are appealing to divers not to use a dangerous method when fishing.

A third diver has died after using a method known as hookah diving while diving for sea cucumbers in Ha'apai this week .

Matangi Tonga online reports hookah diving uses an engine on a boat pumping compressed air to a diver below the surface.

The Police Commissioner Grant O'Fee says the method is dangerous and illegal and police are appealing to divers to never use it.

He says police are considering what charges will be laid in relation to this latest incident.
