Australia's government says its relationship with Fiji is growing along with the progress Fiji is making towards democracy.

Australia this week announced Margaret Twomey as its High Commissioner to Fiji, ending a three-year hiatus caused by the expulsion of Australia's previous High Commissioner in 2009.

The country's parliamentary secretary for foreign affairs, Richard Marles, says Australia is cautiously optimistic about the path Fiji is walking down.

"Even in relation specifically to the electoral and constitutional process, Australia has made sure that we are the single biggest bilateral donor to Fiji to help that process along, because we want to put out money where our mouth is, when we say we want to help Fiji in its retun to democracy we want to do that, and we are."
