Fiji Constitution Commission Chair says draft document the real deal

Fiji's Constitution Commission Chairman Professor Yash Ghai says the draft constitution doesn't contain any concessions, despite the Commission's work being hampered by government decrees and other pressures.

Professor Ghai handed over the draft to the President Ratu Epeli Nailataikau at Government House today.

He says the Commission tried to design a constitution which makes citizenship and individual rights central, rather than past constitutions that were built more on communal affiliation.

He says while the Commission's work has been made difficult by the regime, he says it's a true reflection of the members' views.

"We made no concessions of that kind, no compromises, we have maintained our principles when we began our process and we have stuck to them and the documents that are being produced are authentic recommendations, our views."

Professor Yash Ghai says the draft includes a Bill of Rights which the Commission hopes will restore many of the rights which have been taken away from the people over the years.
