Twelve months jail for Samoa doctor convicted of indecent assault

A senior medical doctor in Samoa has been has been sentenced to twelve months in jail.

Le Mamea Dr Emosi Puni was convicted earlier this year of indecently assaulting a woman patient seven years ago.

The sentencing ruling was adjourned last Friday because of the damage from tropical cyclone Evan.

The court did not consider the defense counsel's submission for the defendant to be given community hours.

This is the first case in Samoa of a medical doctor being charged with sexual assault.
