Fiji leader acknowledges relief assistance

5:23 am on 24 December 2012

Fiji's interim prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has paid tribute to all Fijians for their work in bringing relief to those affected by Cyclone Evan.

The clean-up has continued and according to the National Disaster Management Office, all evacuation centres in the Central/Eastern division have now been closed.

Its director, Lieutenant-Colonel Manasa Tagicakibau, has told the Fiji Sun that dozens such centres are still open elsewhere in the disaster zone.

More assistance is on its way for victims, with Japan sending tents, tarpaulins, sleeping mats and power generators.

Power supplies have been restored to a majority of customers in all but the Western Division.

Tavua, Rakiraki and Ba are still badly affected.
