Tropical depression off Solomons could develop into a cyclone

Forecasters say a tropical depression off Solomon Islands could develop into a cyclone.

The system is heading in a south-south-west direction and is expected to turn south east, past New Caledonia

The Fiji Metservice's Duty forecaster, Amit Singh, says there is a high chance of the depression developing into a cyclone in the next 24 to 36 hours.

He says if the system remains on its track it will pass Solomon Islands and the central and eastern parts will experience heavy rain and gale force winds.

"For the Solomons they should expect rain. And for the Solomons we don't expect any hurricane or strong force winds just the gales but the rain will be heavy which can cause flooding in some areas."

Amit Singh says the cyclone won't affect Vanuatu or Fiji.
