Fiji power woes after Cyclone Evan continue

11:48 am on 29 December 2012

Disaster officials in Fiji say it will be up to three weeks before electricity services are fully restored in the Western Division.

The region was the worst hit when Cyclone Evan struck.

The director of the National Disaster Management Office, Manasa Tagicakibau, says full power and water services are now on in the Northern Division.

But he says it is a different story in Western.

"We have restored around 70 percent as of today while the North is back up and running as normal - 100 percent restoration of power and, likewise, water in the North. However in the West it is a little bit different because that was the worst hit area."

Manasa Tagicakibau says the number of emergency shelters is continuing to drop, with 43 now in operation, catering for about 1,200 evacuees.
