Man missing amid New Caledonia wild weather

A teenager is missing in New Caledonia in wild weather brought by a tropical depression that earlier had been Cyclone Freda.

Local media reports say the 18-year-old from Houailou was carried away as a group of five young people tried to cross a swollen river in the territory's north.

Much of New Caledonia has been hit by heavy rain and strong winds, causing disruptions across the territory.

More than 3,000 households are without power.

The centre of the depression has moved to the east of New Caledonia where it is expected to turn southward over the next day.
