Fiji to get new flag

11:34 am on 3 January 2013

The Fiji regime says the country will get a new flag.

The interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, made the announcement in his New Year's Day message.

The permanent secretary for the Prime Minister's Office, Colonel Pio Tikoduadua, has told the Fiji Times that Fiji needed a new identity.

Col Tikoduadua says the new flag is part of the changing spirit Fiji is heading towards and is one that would brand and market the country.

He likened the proposed new flag to the new currency notes, which he says captured everything in Fiji.

He says Fijians will be given the opportunity to design the new flag.
