The last French Polynesian to volunteer for the liberation of France during the Second World War has died.

La Dépêche de Tahiti says John Martin died aged 91.

Mr Martin had been honoured for his effort with the Pacific Battalion which grouped volunteers from the French colonies to fight on the side of Charles de Gaulle.

He joined the forces in 1940 and fought at Bir Hakeim in Libya in 1942.
