Inter-Samoa land swap deal queried

2:30 pm on 8 January 2013

American Samoa's new governor and lieutenant governor are still trying to gather information about the land lease signed between Samoa and American Samoa under which the two sides will exchange land.

A special advisor to the governor, Iulogologo Joseph Pereira, says they have not been able to locate any paperwork on the land leases.

Iulogologo says the lease agreement may require permission from the US State Department because American Samoa has no authority to enter into bilateral agreements with independent countries, like Samoa.

The land swap was signed last week just before the new governor assumed office.

Media sources in Samoa say the one acre property for American Samoa in Apia is near the residences of the Australian High Commission on the hills of Vailima.

The land for Samoa in the territory is by the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tafuna.
