Probe continues into torching of Solomons police post

5:12 am on 9 January 2013

A Solomon Islands police post on the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal, which was built with donor funds but burned to the ground at the weekend, had just been vacated by officers from the regional intervention forces and local police.

The Guadalcanal Provincial Police Commander, David Diosi, says a team of officers from the Solomon Islands Police and Guadalcanal Provincial Police accompanied him and Deputy Police Commissioner to visit the Mbabanakira Police Post.

He says while they suspect arson has been committed, they are still unsure of the motive, adding if torching was intentional, then it was a threat to peace in the communities there.

Mr Diosi says another team of police officers will travel to Mbabanakira next week to continue with their investigations.

He has described as sad and senseless the burning of the police post, adding police presence in that area is important because officers would ensure people uphold law and order and support the work of chiefs, community and church leaders in ascertaining community harmony.
