5:14 am on 9 January 2013

Fiji's government has allocated about 700-thousand US dollars to rehabilitate schools in the Western Division that were affected by Hurricane Evan.

The Commissioner Western, Commander Joeli Cawaki, says schools have been advised to engage their contractors and liaise closely with their divisional office.

He says contractors will be given strict guidelines once they are engaged to carry out the necessary works for the school, and the timeline to complete the work is essential.

In Lautoka, Nadi and Yasawa there are 86 schools either partially or completely destroyed by Hurricane Evan.

Commander Cawaki says more than 29,000 students have been affected.

FBC news reports him as saying all students should return to schools on the 22nd of January.
