Poor drains worsen flooding in Samoa capital

A retail owner in Samoa is calling for drains in Apia to be better maintained in an effort to try and reduce ongoing incidences of flooding.

The owner of the Body Shop clothing store in Saleufi says he already had to close shop last week to mop up after flooding, when another heavy downpour occurred on Sunday, causing more flooding.

The flooding affected parts of Apia, including Savalalo, Saleufi, Vaimoso, Fugalei and Taufusi.

Cyril Curry says poor drainage is contributing to the problem, with the worst ever flooding experienced during Cyclone Evan.

He says his insurance company no longer covers flooding to his shop.
