Call to defer same sex marriage law in Tahiti

5:36 pm on 15 January 2013

A French Polynesian member of the French National Assembly, Edouard Fritch, says he will lobby Paris to defer the application of the law on same sex marriage in Tahiti.

Mr Fritch made the comment on local radio as the Assembly is poised to pass the law later this month despite recent street protests in France and its territories.

He says there has not been enough debate in French Polynesia and therefore he would like the law to be applied later.

He didn't say for how long he would like the territory to be exempted.

Mr Fritch says some people would find it difficult to accept a law that no longer used the terms father and mother.
