Updated at 4:22 pm on 22 January 2013

A cyclone alert has been issued for American Samoa and the islands of Manu'a.

Our correspondent Monica Miller says the Met office has informed residents that cyclone Garry is due to pass by close to the Manu'a islands tonight.

She says all residents are preparing for the cyclone.

"Manu'a residents have been told to brace for winds of up to 60 to 70 miles per hour and higher gusts. Meanwhile we here on the main island of Tutuila Aunu'u and Swains are under a gale warning and the wind strength we are told to expect is between 30 to 40 miles and higher gusts."
