9:35 pm on 22 January 2013

Tropical Cyclone Garry is intensifying as its passes American Samoa's Manu'a islands.

The National Weather Service in American Samoa issued a cyclone alert for Manu'a and gale warnings for other parts of the territory, as well as a high surf advisory.

Our correspondent, Monica Miller, says after the experience of Cyclone Evan in December, many residents are already well equipped for a cyclone.

"We were told by the stores is that people still have supplies from last month, so that they didn't expect a mad rush to get or stock up on plywood and that sort of thing to board up houses."

Monica Miller says Cyclone Garry is expected to bring winds of up to 70 miles per hour.
