Solomons village resumes dolphin kill after NGO deal falters

2:36 pm on 23 January 2013

Reports from Solomon Islands say a village has killed 700 dolphins amid a financial dispute with the NGO, Earth Island Institute.

The Solomon Star says the people of Fanalei in South Malaita resorted to their normal way of hunting dolphins because they failed to get the money they were promised.

A village delegate says Earth Island Institute had promised to pay 320,000 US dollars but only gave about a third of the sum.

He says people cannot wait because they need money to survive in the local economy.

He says they can earn money by selling dolphin teeth and meat.

The Earth Island Institute says money given to the village committee has been misused.
