The Cook Islands Met Office is urging locals to get prepared as Cyclone Garry approaches.

Garry is about 385 nautical miles northwest of Palmerston and about 275 nautical miles west of Suwarrow.

Forecasters expect Garry to impact the Southern Cook Islands.

Met office director, Arona Ngari, says locals need to be vigilant with preparations, especially as this is their first cyclone alert this season.

"Tie your roofs down, move to higher ground if there is any higher ground, especially during the high tide, and just listen to radio station for any information pertaining to tropical cyclone Garry and make a call to police personnel on each island, if not send an email or call the office in Rarotonga."
