Fiji regime to complete Constituent Assembly after mid-February

1:55 pm on 30 January 2013

Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, is to send out the last invitations for the Constituent Assembly after mid-February.

This is in line with a regime decree for existing parties to register by February 14th.

The decree sets out that the Assembly has to be diverse and include representatives of political parties.

The Assembly will be given until late March to approve a new constitution which will be the basis for the election promised for next year.

The regime is expected to release its own draft no later than tomorrow after dumping the one prepared by the Constitution Commission earlier this month.
