Sport: Fiji bow out of contention at Wellington 7s

5:42 am on 2 February 2013

Fiji have bombed out of contention at the Wellington Sevens after a stuttering display at Westpac Stadium.

The sevens giants were shock losers against Scotland and Australia on a day of upsets, which also saw New Zealand and France suffer suprise defeats.

Vinnie Wylie reports.

"It's the first time Fiji have failed to qualify for the Cup quarter finals in Wellington in the tournament's 14-year history. Coach Timoci Wainiqolo says his players were guilty of making too many simple mistakes. Their punishment is a Bowl quarter final against the USA this afternoon. Tonga fared even worse on day one, going winless in Pool B, and will also contest a Bowl quarter final against Canada. Samoa were the only bright spot for the Pacific, topping Pool C after wins over South Africa, Wales and Canada, to set up a last eight showdown against Argentina."
