Sport: Mistakes and inexperience cost Fiji at Wellington 7s

7:37 am on 2 February 2013

Fiji coach Timoci Wainiqolo says his young team were found wanting under pressure after failing to qualify for the Cup quarter finals at the Wellington Sevens.

The Pacific giants suffered shock losses against Scotland and Australia in Pool D and, despite beating Portugal in their final game, will enter day two out of title contention in Wellington for the first time.

Fiji will meet the USA next in the Bowl quarter finals and Timoci Wainiqolo says his players need to put yesterday behind them.

"Some young boys in there are new, and Wellington is different to any tournament, it's quite a big tournament and you need to concentrate, and that's why we lost some balls and games. We didn't come to lose. We now need to move forward to the next game and next tournament."

Samoa were the only bright spot for the Pacific, topping Pool C after wins over South Africa, Wales and Canada, to set up a last eight showdown against Argentina.

England, Kenya and Australia were the other Group winners on day one.
