Fuel shortage issues faced on Manihiki in Northern Cooks

9:05 am on 9 February 2013

It will be five to six weeks before a fuel shortage on the isolated atoll of Manihiki in the northern Cook Islands is resolved.

The acting Island Secretary for Manihiki, Tereapii Paulo, says the atoll is having to borrow a one thousand litres of fuel from a Thai fishing vessel located nearby.

She says the Police launch Te Kukupa will also be delivering five thousand litres of fuel within the next few days to keep power running on the island until a bulk supply of fuel from Rarotonga is delivered in March.

Tereapii Paulo says power on Manihiki, which often face fuel shortages, is being rationed on 18 hours a day.
