Solomons quake relief effort still difficult

5:13 am on 11 February 2013

Aftershocks in Solomon Islands Temotu province have continued to hamper relief efforts following last Wednesday's earthquake and tsunami.

Vessels have been delayed in docking and reports say the Lata wharf suffered damage from the strong aftershocks.

Communications in the region also continue to be difficult, with the Red Cross being unsure if sufficient aid has arrived to cover the immediate needs for shelter, food and water.

The Australian foreign minister Bob Carr arrived in Honiara yesterday and promised more help.

He says among the additional help will be funding for a medical flight including three doctors and three nurses and funding to evacuate two injured victims to hospitals elsewhere in the country.
