A Solomon Islands patrol vessel is about to distribute emergency aid to the eastern Santa Cruz village of Nagu and surrounding villages.

The first shipment of emergency aid supplies arrived at the weekend, after the magnitude 8 earthquake and subsequent tsunami last Wednesday destroyed many homes and killed at least ten people.

Temotu Disaster Chairman, Solomon Palusi, says the aid is expected to reach more than 1000 people.

"Mostly at the moment we have food stuff, like rice, and shelters and water containers, basically the basic needs that people need, so we have those things in place and we are (sending) the emergency supplies to the people who are affected."

Solomon Palusi says more aid supplies are still urgently needed.

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, visited the region over the weekend and flew over areas that were badly damaged, sighting damage to key infrastructure such as the wharf in Lata.
