Vanuatu women's group gets financial from Australia

The Vanuatu Women's Centre says funding from Australia has enabled the organisation to purchase its own building in the capital.

The Director of the Centre, Marilyn Tahi made the comments during a visit by Australia's Foreign Minister, Senator Bob Carr to the organisation's new office in Port Vila on Wednesday.

Mrs Tahi says the organisation has dealt with over ten thousand cases of domestic and sexual violence against women since it was established in 2007.

She says the financial assistance from the Australian government of over 500-thousand US dollars has enabled the centre to acquire land and an office.

"Their assistance is so important to Vanuatu, especially to Vanuatu as a whole, as a country, and also the Vanuatu women. But when the assistance comes to the Vanuatu women, it trickles down to the whole family and so the assistance from the Australian government is important in that respect."

Marilyn Tahi says the assistance of Australia and other donor agencies has helped to expand its network through new offices set up in Luganville on the island Santo, Tanna and Torba province.
