The release of the first batch of tax refund cheques this week will give American Samoa's sagging economy a boost.

Treasury released 150 checks totalling more than 4 million US dollars on Tuesday, the first batch for the 2012 tax year.

Treasurer Falema'o Phil Pili says over 10 million US dollars in tax refunds will be released in the next couple of months and will help boost the territory's ailing economy.
