Sport: Solomon Islands cuts football schedule to keep in budget

11:49 am on 15 February 2013

The Solomon Islands Football Federation is trimming its schedule in 2013 in an effort to stay within budget.

The only national competition being proposed this year is the Telekom S-League, meaning neither the Solomon Cup nor the National Futsal League will go ahead.

Interim CEO Neil Poloso says that while the federation's intentions are to have as many football events per year as possible, 2013 is being used to review and plan out what can be organised in line with existing resources.

Internationally, the same austerity template is being applied with teams from the Solomons confirmed to take part in the Oceania Beach Soccer and Futsal Championships, while withdrawing from both the U-17 and U-20 championships.

The national men's team is also still involved in the third stage of Oceania qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
