Fiji NGO says regime keeps failing to live up to own words on constitution

The Fiji NGO, the Citizens Constitutional Forum, says the regime has failed to live up to its word in the process of drawing up a new constitution.

The Forum's head, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says the draft which the regime dumped was an authentic representation of the wide-ranging views of the Fijian people.

According to the regime's own decree, the Constituent Assembly was to start debating the draft a month ago for final approval next month.

To date, the regime is yet to present a new draft or set up an Assembly.

Mr Yabaki says the regime doesn't appear to trust what the people have come up with

"It's a moving goal posts, they are moving it all the time. Simply because they have not lived up to their word. They are interfering in the process which was beautifully conducted."

The Reverend Yabaki says the Constitutent Assembly should be clued up on the people's draft before they face the challenge of the government's draft.
