Vanuatu MP says Kilman rent issue not linked to eligibility challenge

The Vanuatu opposition MP Willie Jimmy says a claim that the Prime Minister Sato Kilman is owed money by government is a different issue to his election dispute.

Mr Jimmy is considering appealing against last week's Supreme Court decision to strike out his petition on Mr Kilman's eligibility for the recent election.

The petition alleged the Prime Minister hadn't settled his debt while other candidates were made to settle theirs before being allowed to stand.

With the petition struck out on a technicality, Mr Jimmy says the core issue still hasn't been addressed.

Officials in the Prime Minister's office claim that Mr Kilman is owed money in rent by the government.

However, Mr Jimmy says that is a different issue.

"Sato Kilman can pursue that through his claim against the government. He has been in government for the past three and half years. He should have pursued the claim against the government on that. The issue is the eligibility of his candidature to contest the election. He's not qualified to contest the election because he's got a debt."
