Fiji High Court Judge raises concerns on high number of rape cases

10:40 am on 17 February 2013

Fiji High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo says he is sick and tired of rape cases.

He made these remarks while refusing to excuse the presence of two juveniles charged with rape for the next court date.

Fiji Village online says the two juveniles are charged with two counts of rape along with a 18-year-old man.

Legal Aid Lawyer, Jeremaia Savou, who is representing the two juveniles informed the court that the two are school students and asked the court if they could be excused for the next sitting.

However, Justice Temo says there are too many rape cases and people are asking for higher sentences for rape.

Justice Temo says the only concession he can give is that the two appear on a Friday and attend school from Monday to Thursday.

The case has been adjourned to 15th March.
