French Polynesia's pro-independence member of the French Senate, Richard Tuheiava, says the decolonisation bid put forward at the UN in New York is to restore the territory's right to choose its own future.
France took the territory off the list in 1947 and has resisted revisiting the issue since.
Mr Tuheiava says he will return to New York next week to continue lobbying for the General Assembly to reinscribe the territory on the UN decolonisation list.
"We are not asking for independence right now, we are asking to be relist on the C24 list to be able to reconquer our right to self-determination before going to a referendum.
