Fiji pig farmers call for pork import duties

1:17 pm on 19 February 2013

Fiji's pig farmers want the interim government to impose a 32 percent duty on imported pork.

This comes as the industry says cheap imported processed pork is seriously threatening the survival of the industry.

The president of the Fiji Pig Farmer's Association, Simon Cole, says the market is distorted by subsidised Canadian and European pork that sells far below the very best price the local industry can offer.

He says the government has seen the benefits of a 32 percent duty placed on imported chicken and the local pork industry wants the same treatment.
