Plans to make PNG's Kavieng an international airport

7:38 pm on 21 February 2013

Papua New Guinea's New Ireland Provincial Government has signalled plans to upgrade Kavieng Airport to an international facility.

EM TV reports that the Kavieng Airport Project is slated to begin this year and is part of the province's bid for autonomy.

The Minister for Civil Aviation Steven Davis has announced the national government's support for the project.

An estimated two million US dollars is needed for land release and compensation payment before the upgrade of the airport, including lengthening of the runway, can begin.
