The former governor of the Northern Marianas Benigno Fitial says he was prepared to present an aggressive defense to the impeachment allegations forwarded to the Senate from the House of Representatives.

Mr Fitial, the first governor in CNMI history to resign, says poor health as well as putting the islands' best interests first led to him to step down.

Mr Fitial says none of the allegations in the House report was an impeachable offence.

The House Speaker, Joseph Deleon Guerrero, the main author of the impeachment allegation against Mr Fitial says while he's happy with Mr Fitial's resignation, the CNMI now has to move forward and tackle its multitude of problems.
