The hotel industry in the Northern Marianas could be short of hundreds of beds after incurring a shortfall of about 5 hundred rooms in December, and recording the highest occupancy rate for 15 years, at 91 per cent, in January.

The chairman of the Northern Marianas Hotel Association, Nick Nishikawa, says the high number is because it's the traditional peak season for the hotel industry, but he is cautiously optimistic.

He hopes the positive trend will continue, but this is depend on factors beyond the control of the hotel industry.
