Former CNMI attorney general applies for bail, before being arrested

A bail application has been rejected for the former attorney general of the Northern Marianas, Edward Buckingham, who is believed to be in hiding in the US state of Iowa.

Mr Buckingham is wanted in the CNMI on numerous felony charges.

Last week his lawyer presented a 50 thousand dollar cheque for bail.

But an Associate Judge at the Superior Court, David Wiseman, has rejected the application saying granting bail when a defendant is not in custody is not something that can be found in any CNMI statute.

He says bail will only be considered for Mr Buckingham when he is in custody and appears before the court.
