MP wants Solomon Islands government to help Fiji unions

2:27 pm on 4 March 2013

A newly elected MP in Solomon Islands says he will campaign for the government to put pressure on Fiji to ease restrictions on trade unions.

Johnley Hatimoana, who was elected to the Ngella seat in last week's by-election, is the former general secretary of the Solomon Islands National Teachers Association.

He says the Fiji government is being unfair on unions and he feels the Solomon Islands government could do more to put pressure on the regime.

"As far as I'm concerned, what I have seen is happening in Fiji is really undermining the rights and aspirations of the people of Fiji and I think what the current regime is doing is not proper. It deprives the rights of freedom of association and the freedom of speech and I am going to address that in Parliament."
