Low expected to cause flooding in Fiji

A low pressure system is expected to hit Fiji over the next couple of days, and is expected to cause widespread flooding.

A forecaster at the Fiji Meteorological Office, Sanjay Prakash, says it is currently raining heavily in Vanua Levu, and the bad weather is expected to spread to the rest of the country later today.

He says there are severe weather warnings in place and he expects a number of rivers and streams to burst their banks over the next 48 hours.

"Tomorrow we are expecting heavy rainfall exceeding 150mm in 24 hours time which could trigger flooding of some major rivers as well. Currently we have a heavy rain warning (and) we are closely monitoring these areas."

Sanjay Prakash says this system is the same one that is behind flooding in Tonga, with a number of properties affected around the capital, Nuku'alofa.
