Sport: Simple equation for Samoa softballers

11:58 am on 7 March 2013

The equation is simple - beat South Africa and Samoa are through to the playoffs at the Softball World Championships in Auckland.

The Tanifa came just short of an upset on Thursday, beaten 3-2 by defending champions Australia.

Needing three outs to close out the match, the Pacific Islanders couldn't quite hold on.

Coach Chris Kohlhase says the team is disappointed to let the game slip but will refocus for today.

"There's a bit of a logjam in our pool but we've done our calculations and a straight win will get us through. There's a couple of teams on a similar win-loss ratio but, under the current formula, a win will get us through. They're well aware of what they can achieve if we turn up to play and put our heads to it."
