The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in the Solomon Islands says the seaweed industry is growing nationwide.

The Chief Fisheries Officer for the Aquaculture division, Alex Meloti, says seaweed farms are already operating in five provinces, and the Ministry is currently helping establish farms in the Makira and Isabel Provinces.

Mr Meloti says the Solomon Islands now outperforms Kiribati as the Pacific's largest seaweed exporter and the country has plans to grow its industry even further.

He says the seaweed species used in the country was introduced only recently and it is blended into finger polish and ice-cream holders, among other things.
